George Mason University Southern Africa Class

The Academy of International Sport (AIS) at George Mason University (GMU), Virginia is excited to offer an extraordinary opportunity for students to experience the magic of Africa’s first World Cup and learn about Sport, History & Culture in Southern Africa. The class is being conducted June 15 – July 5, 2010 and is open to the first 40 students who register. GMU is kindly inviting students from other programs to participate with them in this fantastic opportunity. Class credit can easily be transferred from GMU to any other USA institution. You can earn college credit (undergraduate or graduate) for this trip through GMU with the opportunity to enroll in 3 or 6 credit hours. There is opportunity for just a few graduating seniors who do not need the credit hours to participate. Students who choose to do so will have the opportunity to work on a research project involving the FIFA World Cup which is a unique résumé builder. Courses will be offered in international sports management, events management, and in sport and development. The class is being led by Dr. John Nauright, Professor of Sport Management and a leading scholar of South African & global sport. He has lived in South Africa and has previously led many successful study abroad classes. Dr. Nauright is the author of Sport, Cultures and Identities in South Africa as well as Rugby & the South African Nation and the forthcoming International Sport Management, as well as the editor of Sport Around the World among many other books. Dr. Nauright is the director of the AIS at George Mason University and is truly a citizen of the world having taught at universities in Australia & New Zealand and completed his PhD studies in South Africa.
